Has george orwells book 1984 come true?
Science fiction often leads science fact. The benefit of science fiction is that it allows us (the public) so steel ourselves against the onset of the fact (and maybe avoid it!) The problem with 1984 is that the calendar year has past, so generally it is taken as read that the risk has too – however this isn’t the case, we are more at risk than ever. If only the book had been called 2024 we would still be on our guard, and Nu Labours drive to a Big Brother culture would still be held up to ridicule and not have advanced so far as it has.
