Sword fish used to be more abundant and the average size of the sword fish used to be larger. However, modern commercial sword fishing has taken its toll upon the sword fish population. The world record for the largest sword fish ever caught is over 1000 pounds and in the early 20th century trophy sword fish were hundreds of pounds. Now an average sword fish will weigh approximately 200 pounds.
