China has continued the program of economic liberalization that was promoted by Deng Xiaoping and created a system with considerably greater economic freedom. This has certainly served to raise the living standard of a significant number of people and create both an urban middle class and a small elite of the very rich. But politically China has not changed at all. It remains a brutal dictatorship unrestrained by the rule of Law and with no respect for its own constitutionally guaranteed liberties. In short, it remains a typical Marxist state following the principle of so called “Democratic Centralism” and ensuring the “leading role of the communist Party” in enforcing the “Dictatorship of the proletariat.” Many people make the error of believing that Communism is, first and foremost, an economic system.
