The Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Sānguó Yǎnyì by Luó Guànzhōng, is one of the “four” classic novels of traditional Chinese literature. It was written during the Mongol era as a sort of literary flattery to their new Yuan dynasty. The novel covers the politics at the end of Han Dynasty (these events took place about 1,000 years before Guanzhong wrote his book. The complex story (on the level of War and Peace) covers the actions of various “villains” and one hero as the han dynasty fails and the new Jin dynasty is established (the Jin dynasty, like the mongol Yuan dynasty was not a Han Chinese dynasty.) I had to read it in Chinese literature course and found it a little boring. Later I read it again while living in China, I found it much more interesting since by then I understood the historical background of the book, and I could visit the various sites mentioned in the story.
