From the mid-1960’s there was a sudden and impressive flowering of writing in English by Welsh Poets (it was then called Anglo-Welsh writing, these days that term is frowned on). Most of these new poets organised around either Meic Stephens’ Poetry Wales or Roland Matthias’ Anglo Welsh Review magazines. Tony Curtis first caught national attention when he was one of three winners of the 1972 Young Welsh Writers Prize. In 1974 all three winners appeared in an anthology “Three Young Anglo-Welsh Poets. Tony, and his co-winners, Duncan Bush and Nigel Jenkins, have all gone on to distinguished careers servicing Anglo-Welsh literature. Tony in particular allied himself with the burgeoning arts-education scene of the 1970’s, setting up the first ever course in Anglo-Welsh literature at the University of Glamorgan in the 1990’s.
