No it doesn’t look like any sprain I’ve ever seen….but, it does look EXACTLY like mine did when I broke it! Go back for a re-xray and tell him to look carefully. PS: I broke my fifth metatarsal, which is the bone on the outside of the foot, just where you described.

It sounds like you may have fractured your metatarsal (the bones that attach your ankle to your toes). I have seen injuries with helacious bruises like that, and while the DR you saw sounds like an idiot, he is right. The thing about foot fractures is that the foot bones have lines, etc. in them that large bones, like an arm or leg do not. Most of the time a fracture can be camoflauged behind severe swelling, which you obviously have. I suggest going to a podiatrist and having them look at it. Even if its not broken, you may still need a cast for stability. Good luck!!
