The book version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s is much different. There is no happy ending, and I would disagree with the person saying the character is nicer. She’s more remote and uncaring; charming and beautiful but she never backs it up. The movie version is at least human enough to fall in love. My favorite 50’s/60’s writer is Charlotte Armstrong. She writes lovely mystery/suspense stories that usually have a romance thrown in. My very favorite is A Dram of Poison, but her best known is The Unsuspected. Mary Stewart is also good; more gothic romance than mystery. And I highly recommend I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, about a girl who wants to be a writer and her eccentric family in the 40’s.
