Has anyone ever eaten Lamprey or Hagfish? What did it taste like?
I’ve never tried lamprey, but hagfish is NOTHING like other fish. It’s awesomely delicious! I ate tons of it in S. Korea where their name for it (kkomjangeo) translates to “slime eel”. It’s considered an aphrodisiac there, but I never noticed anything. It’s not flaky, it’s more the texture of an overdone scallop, but way tastier. They prepped it by cutting off the head and making a long slit down the entire length of the body, removed the organs and bones, and let it marinate in a bowl for 10 minutes at your table. Then, you basically pick it up with tongs and cut it into chunks with poultry shears over a charcoal grill at your table. It cooks in no time and has an incomparable flavor eaten right off the grill wrapped in lettuce leaves with some garlic slices and hot pepper paste. Damn. I just made myself hungry.
