Has anyone else burnt their hands using a MacBook Pro?

Last night while working on my new MacBook Pro (17 inch, 2.06 GHz, 7200 RPM HD, 4 MB RAM), the left side of the MacBook underneath the keyboard became so hot as to burn my hand after several hours of exposure. Common sense would have dictated that I turn off the computer and take breaks at regular intervals, but I had a tight deadline and was in no position to take as many breaks as would have been necessary to cool the computer down to a reasonable temperature. As a result I was left with a sensations not unlike a sunburn on my left palm, which prevented me from working further, and I missed my deadline. The interesting point is that this happens only on the left side of the computer, as the right side stays at a reasonable temperature. This would lead me to believe that either my computer is defective, or that there are components on the left side that run at a higher temperature than on the right side.
