Harry Potter and Twilight: Are they kid stuff – or the new family entertainment?
The trend these days seems to be that family entertainment is aimed at a general audience, meaning that it has stuff for kids and adults concurrently. Harry Potter actually began as a series for children, but as more adults started reading the books the author began writing the later novels for a larger audience. The writing style in the first book is very different from that in the seventh – or even the fourth, for that matter. Twilight I can’t comment much on, because I haven’t dealt with it much. Look at the Pixar movies as an example of the way things are going. They appeal to all audiences partially because they can be understood by children, but more, I think, because today’s adults have a fondness for that kind of entertainment dating back to their own childhood. Same goes for the animators and story writers that made the films. Entertainment in the future will evolve from what it is currently. It’s no fluke, and we won’t slip backwards into any “old” ways.
