Guest column: Go ahead, make my day: Do more guns mean less crime?
Only recently, I was one of those misguided souls who thought that the government should enact stricter gun control laws. Count me among the flip-floppers. The recent spate of opinion-page letter writers and the pronouncements of gun advocates has convinced me, and helped me to reach my current state of enlightenment. Their argument is unassailable. Our safety will be increased when more people carry firearms. With the proliferation of guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens, criminals will begin to fear real and immediate retribution. I disagree, however, with the NRA s desire to have each state pass a concealed weapons law. Weapons should not be concealed. The laws should require that all weapons be carried in plain sight. People should strap on their guns as the cowboys did in the Old West. Such a move would not only help deter crime, it would also help the economy. A whole new fashion industry would rise up to provide custom-made belts and holsters. Imagine the always-practical l
