Every column in the blackboard gradebook has a setting that controls how it is displayed. For numeric information you can display as a raw score, as a percentage (of the “points possible” you’ve set for the column/assessment), as a letter grade, etc. Sometimes the default seems to be letter grade. You can modify a column by clicking on the name in the column header in the gradebook and choosing “item information”, then setting “Display As” to “Score”. Notice that you can also set a column to display as “Text” and not be included in the gradebook totals. This is useful if you have a column you want to use as a comment, either to yourself (perhaps reminding you which section the student is in) or to the student (“good job”).
