Good Grief! Whats wrong with a .38 Special?
Use 125 grain 38 Special+P jacketed hollow points for Self-defense ammo in it and you will be well protected.* However the Best No-nonsense Man Stopper that has been Tried, True, Tested, and proved to be the Best is the 357 Magnum using 125 grain jacketed hollow points for Self-defense ammo.* You can also shoot 38 Special ammo in a 357 Magnum.* You get two (2) handguns for the price of one.* You could Upgrade to the 357 Magnum if you so desire.* I did.*
The NYPD has never tried to furnish the best to their officers, because they’re afraid the police might shoot somebody. DAO is also known as the “New York trigger” precisely for this reason. NYC is especially concerned about accidental discharges, and that’s the reason the DAO was developed. Whether it really prevents enough AD’s to make the less precise shooting and greater risk to the policeman a worthwhile trade is an open question. For a small guy who has trouble with the heavy DA trigger pull, you may wish you didn’t have that bobbed hammer, but there’s nothing in the world wrong with 38 Spl. I’ve been keeping my mother’s maintained for her, and I thought it was a decent pick even when she was younger than 80. I’m a “forty-something” guy myself, and I razz my brother about his 357 Magnum and 9mm Parabellum all the time. It’s just something to use for a friendly jab, so don’t take it seriously. Once you find some grips to fit and get used to the trigger pull, your revolver will be
The .38 Special was the Police caliber of choice in the early 1900’s. When criminals started driving cars, they needed a round that would penetrate a car door (real steel back then) and so they went to the .357 magnum. I don’t think humans have evolved enough in the last 100 years to be impervious to .38 Special rounds. I have a hunting revolver in .357 and typically shoot .38 Specials in it, except for hunting.
The .38 special is very adequate. My dad was an NYPD cop and a homicide detective and seen it’s effects. It developed a bad rep because PDs across the US used a very dense 158gr LRN which cut through the human body like a knife through butter. In Iraq they have a problem with 124 gr. 9mm FMJs, way lighter than the 158gr. Buy +P Hollow Points which will dump all of its energy into the target and destroy a good amount of tissue. You go to the range so you will probably put the round where it needs to go. Remember, a .22LR to the brain is deadlier than a .
Ignore them. The .38 has been around for a long time and works for those who are accurate with it. I knew this guy who lived in the mountains all alone a hermit if you will. All he killed his deer with was a 6 in barrel .38 special and he never lost one. I am talking mule deer! No joke. He would take his time and stalk up to one until he was about 20 yards from it and shoot it in the lungs or a head shot and he was a very good shot. Now if he could do that I have no doubt about the .38 being able to stop an attacker. Problem is this new magnum super doper whiz bang gun craze. Somehow the deer and criminals got tougher and now you have to have a friggin cannon for them. I think the media and braggarts are part of the reason. The .38 is a fine self defense gun for a lady or a man if they are accurate with it. Hundreds of police departments used them with 158 gr bullets for a long time. You have a fine weapon to defend yourself with. Tell those jokers to shut it.
