Robert, I have just recently set up a new salt water fish only tank and it’s been up and running for about 6 weeks now. I have only 1 blue velvet damsel and 2 small green Chromis in the tank and I am about 3 weeks past the cycled stage. Just recently I have been getting this mysterious thick ‘golden brown’ build-up in my sump area. Mostly in the filter pads and in the skimmer. The pads turn orange to golden brown in color every time I replace them. In the skimmer this substance builds up quickly and appears to be ‘mud like’ when scraped out with my finger. I don’t know why I am getting so much all this stuff of the sudden. Would you happen to know what it is?
