Going to Japan in January. What clothing should I pack?

Japan is an elongated country in the North-South direction, so the climate varies greatly. It also is quite mountainous, and the Western side of the country (toward China and Korea) gets a lot of snow, while the Eastern coast gets much less, except in the North. But if I assume that you are staying around the big central cities like Tokyo-Yokohama and Osaka-Kyoto, plan for temperatures around 30-35F at night and 35-45F during the day. Winter also tends to be windy and rainy, so it’s best if you bring layered clothing and a waterproof jacket outside. Bring a folding umbrella. Gloves are optional, depending on how used you are to that kind of weather.
