Globalization, National Development, and Education in the New Millennium: Where do we go from here?
by Greg Wiggan Recently, the National Academies Rising Above the Gathering Strom (2007) report drew much attention as the findings pointed to some unique challenges regarding the continued vitality of the United States economy and the gap in the increasing demands of knowledge-intensive industries such as science, mathematics, and technology engineering; and the low school achievement and graduation rates in these areas. With a special charge from Senator Lamar Alexander and Senator Jeff Bingaman of the Committee on Energy and Natural Recourses, the National Academies Committee was asked to examine educational and quality of life issues as they relate to the United States economy. The findings addressed the improvements that are needed in order to ensure the competitiveness of the country in the global economy, and a general concern with lagging student achievement rates across the nation.
