Functions of the facility – exploration, testing and release of biocontrol agents.Why do we need the quarantine facility?
The quarantine facility has many functions in the process of classical biological control. For biological control of invasive insect pests and noxious weeds in Minnesota and the upper Midwest, the facility can provide a secure environment for biological control research consisting of importation, screening, containment, augmentation, study and experimental release of exotic biocontrol agents (insects and mites). The research at the facility involves studies in taxonomy, genetics, life history, host specificity, behavior, control efficacy, experimental release and post-release evaluation. Before any agents can be released into the new environment, the agents will go through very strict host range testing to determine whether they would pose a risk to non-target organisms.
