These are both file systems, or ways to store information on your hard drive. FAT is the older system, using a single lookup table at the begining of the drive. Drive sizes have now got so bit that the FAT system is quite inefficient. It was designed for single use machines. NTFS is more efficient and was built for multi user machines, hence it supports ‘owners’ for files and folders. Both of these are usually associated with Windows based systems. If you have a choice, for your hard drive, use NTFS. USB Sticks usually come formatted for FAT, to make their use on different systems much easier.
