What is SEVIS? SEVIS is the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor Information System that allow schools, ICE, U.S. embassies and consulates abroad and U.S. ports of entry to exchange information on F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors. Is SEVIS new? Yes. And no. The requirement to provide information to the government is not new. But the existing paper-based reporting system precluded multi-agency and school coordination. Congress passed legislation in 1996 requiring INS (now ICE) to transition to an electronic data collection system. Technical challenges and lack of funding delayed development and implementation for years. In October 2001 Congress passed the USA Patriot Act, establishing a deadline for nationwide compliance with the 1996 law. The deadline was January 30, 2003. What data does SEVIS collect?
