President James Garfield, who had the second shortest tenure in presidential history, was the second U.S. President to be assassinated, in 1881 — Abraham Lincoln was the first, in 1865. President William McKinley was shot and mortally wounded by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at Pan American Exposition in Buffalo NY, in 1901. President John F. Kennedy was mortally wounded by gunshots during a midday motorcade in Dallas, in 1963.
