Ford Focus dash and dome flash on and off with no one around?

I have a 2002 Ford Focus. When it sits in the driveway (unoccupied and no key in it) the dash lights blink on and off and the dome light comes on and off. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting or similar problems is appreciated. A short is what I figured but where to start looking for it is the bigger issue. No aftermarket alarm system installed so this is not the problem. I am still pretty confident it’s a short but have no idea where to start testing. A: sounds like a short…
