For walk-ins: birth certificates are available 3 weeks after birth in Chicago, up to 6 months after birth; death certificates are available for the past 6 months for deaths occurring in Chicago only. For mail: birth certificates are usually available 3 weeks after birth in Chicago, up to 10 years after birth; death certificates are available for the past 10 years for deaths occurring in Chicago only. For deaths occurring between 5 and 10 years ago, records are kept at an off-site location. Search requests will take an extended time to fill. We recommend contacting the Cook County Clerk’s Office (866-252-8974) for faster service. For births or deaths occurring more than 10 years ago, please contact the Cook County Clerks Office.
