Kate – For two main reasons, I do recommend that you do have the wisdom teeth removed. Let me first say, without an xray evaluation what I am going to say is for a normal vertical eruption situation. The unerupted wisdom teeth often cause a weakening of the bone in between the wisdom tooth and the 2nd molar (the tooth in front). As we age, there is an increased chance of developing periodontal disease. As such, a weakened bone situation can cause a more rapid proliferation of the periodontal disease. Secondly, as we age, the density of our bone often increases and the impacted tooth can almost fuse to the bone. If for some reason the cells that line the unerupted tooth become inflamed and necessitate extraction, the difficulty of an extraction increases. So I recommend it being done for a “belt and suspender” reason only, based on not being able to examine the exact situation. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me again.
