For Jimmy Bullard, should Celtic fans read Thomas Gravesen – and heed the warning signs?
The vision behind signing the 31-year-old, even on a year-long loan deal from Hull City, must not be allowed to blind anyone at Parkhead to the inherent danger that comes with such a venture. Sure, when on his game and, more importantly, fully fit, Bullard would be a huge asset to the side Neil Lennon is trying to forge. His personality is even larger than his talent, and maybe even his hair. But such an attribute can only be placed in the credit column if it is applied on the field and acts as the catalyst for the kind of performances which merit the prodigious wages Bullard is currently seeking. While every signing is a gamble, hooking up with someone in the Bullard wage bracket and age range stacks even more cards against it paying off. Factor in the injury problems he has had in a career which has, to date, delivered far less than his skill merits, and the month-long pursuit in which Celtic have been engaged begins to look like a slow slide down a slippery slope.
