You need to understand the difference in the fafsa deadline, your state deadline, and the schools “priority” deadline. 1. You are correct. “On the day you file” is what they are wanting for your marriage. So if you file on July 12th, you would be classified as independent and would not need your parents income. You would list yours AND your new husband’s income from 2008. Even though you weren’t married in 2008, both of your income still has to be listed. Also note: if you did your fafsa tomorrow and weren’t married, you CAN NOT go back and change it to “married” later. Because it’s the date you signed the fafsa. 2. It is NOT true you will not get grants if you file after March 1st. The federal grant, the Pell does not “run out”.
