I would like to point out an error with the first answer. Julius Caesar never had an alliance (so to speak) with Mark Antony. You must be confused with Augustus’ alliance (the Second Triumvirate) with Antony and Lepidus. Also, the transition from the republic to the empire under Augustus was a natural progression of politics. Many members of the senate had begun to believe that Julius Caesar was gaining to much power, and feared he would ask for the title of king. We all know what happened next, the Ides of March etc. The Gallic Wars showed how great of a military leader Caesar was. I don’t know if you have read Caesar’s Commentarii de Bello Gallico, it is in latin but I’m sure there are plenty of English translations.
