Faking It: When is an Artist Not an Artist? Wednesday August 2, 2006 Perhaps it’s the way this oppressive heat wave is sapping my will to live as a Civil Person, but I completely wanted to tee off – someplace – after reading Helen South’s latest blog and article at About Drawing / Sketching. (Not at Helen, mind you; respect her to death and agree completely with that which she observed.) In a nutshell: • Housepainter poses as “real” artist on reality television series. • Tries to fake out whomever it is that’s supposed to detect “poser” artist from the midst of “legitimate” ones. • Discovers a previously unknown passion for painting things other than siding and trim. • Gets mental health benefits from “fake” art, loves producing it and becomes quite enthused. And, ultimately • Must be coached by professional art critic because he (housepainter) isn’t approach
