Extended Payments – what are they?
Extended payments are designed to help you pay your rent when you start a new job or increase your hours, and your Jobseeker’s Allowance (Income Based) or Income Support ends. You will normally receive the same amount of housing benefit and council tax benefit during your extended payment claim as you did in the last week of you receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance (Income based) or Income Support. The council cannot pay you for any period when you are not charged rent. An extended payment lasts for up to four weeks. To qualify you must have been in receipt of Income Support or Jobseeker’s Allowance (Income based) for at least 26 weeks and your employment must be expected to last more than five weeks.
