Explain the importance of the NAESB/PI DRN?
A.The NAESB/PI DRN is a nine digit, non-intelligent number assigned by IHS. The NAESB/PI DRN was chosen over the (16 byte) PI GRID Code because it does not change. The (16 byte) PI GRID Code can change because it is formed by concatenating several components (state, county, facility code, etc.). Any change in the value of any one of the components causes IHS to change the (16 byte) PI GRID Code, which is not a desirable characteristic for any common code. As in the case with the (16 byte) PI GRID Code, each proprietary gas transaction point (both logical and physical points) provided to IHS by an entity is assigned its own unique NAESB/PI DRN. The 1:1 relationship between a NAESB/PI DRN and a pipeline’s proprietary gas transaction point makes translating back and forth between the two easy.
