In the index to the book, students click on the “take a chapter quiz” option and select a chapter. The student is then shown five questions drawn at random from the database of questions for that chapter. The student then selects answers (all questions are multiple-choice) and submits the answers. The system instantly shows the student how he/she did on the quiz. Instructors can retrieve “real-time” grade reports from any Web browser. These grade reports show the date/time when the student took the quiz, how long it took the student to submit answers to the quiz, and the student’s grade. More detailed reports showing the specific questions taken by each student, and answers to quiz questions, can also be called up by instructors on a Web browser. In our pilot tests, students have found the on-line quizzing system an excellent motivation for reading the chapter and staying caught up with the material.
