PROTECTION OF HUMAN SUBJECTS FROM RESEARCH RISK: The involvement of human subjects and protections from research risk relating to their participation in the proposed research will be assessed. (See criteria included in the section on Federal Citations, below). INCLUSION OF WOMEN, MINORITIES AND CHILDREN IN RESEARCH: The adequacy of plans to include subjects from genders, all racial and ethnic groups (and subgroups), and children as appropriate for the scientific goals of the research will be assessed. Plans for the recruitment and retention of subjects will also be evaluated. (See Inclusion Criteria in the sections on Federal Citations, below). CARE AND USE OF VERTEBRATE ANIMALS IN RESEARCH: If vertebrate animals are to be used in the project, the five items described under Section f of the PHS 398 research grant application instructions (rev. 5/2001) will be assessed.
Is the applicant school/academic component suitable for an award in terms of strengthening the research environment. In addition, all applications will be evaluated with respect to the appropriateness of the budget, the inclusion of children, minorities, and women in clinical research projects, the procedures for the protection of animal or human subjects, and the adequacy of protections for research personnel from biohazards. Further information about these considerations is available at: http://www.csr.nih.gov/guidelines/proc.htm. AWARD CRITERIA Funding for KBRIN-AREA grants is limited and grants are awarded on a competitive basis. Funding decisions on individual applications will be based on the proposed research project’s scientific merit and its relevance to NIH programs. Annual progress reports will be due to the KBRIN-INBRE office no later than January 15th. A Final Progress Report and evidence of submission of the NIH-R15 proposal will be required of all AREA grantees. Copies o
Overall Evaluation: Summarize the major factors from the five review criteria above that contribute or detract from scientific merit. In addition, evaluate whether the proposed project addresses the developmental objectives of SCORE, especially of the S06 mechanism which aims to enhance the research environment needed to support the development of faculty research competitiveness. Not boilerplate – and appears to address programmatic objectives 2.A. Additional Review Criteria: In addition to the above criteria, the following items will continue to be considered in the determination of scientific merit and the priority score: Progress Report (for competing renewal applications only): Have the proposed objectives been accomplished and is there evidence that the SCORE-supported activities have had an impact on the institutional research environment and the faculty’s development of competitive research? Have any of the activities been institutionalized according to the proposed plan? Resub
