Elements are never dismissed automatically! Memories are always subject to forgetting. The more repetitions you make, the slower the forgetting process (for well-formulated knowledge). However, forgetting never stops. Theoretically, you might dismiss an element if you are sure you will die before the next repetition. SuperMemo will always schedule the next repetition, even if the interval is to grow beyond several decades.
