Elena Kagan picked as Supreme Court nominee – who is she?
President Obama is scheduled to announce his Supreme Court nominee at 10 a.m. this morning. According to CNN, that nominee will be Elena Kagan, the U.S. solicitor general. She is knows to bring together people of different ideologies and is a pioneer in her own right. Quick facts: • She is 50 years old which would make her the youngest Supreme Court judge • She received her law degree from Harvard • She is a first female Solicitor General • After working as a lawyer she entered the world of academia serving as the first female Harvard Law School dean • She has never worked as a judge. • If she is appointed a judge, it would bring the number of females on the Supreme Court to three for the first time in history. • She would also become a third Jewish Supreme Court Judge I’m glad Obama nominated another female. I think there needs to be a greater gender balance on the Supreme Court since some issues definitely require a female perspective.
