Easier labour: Is it just a stupid Old Wives Tales?
Do yourself a favor and avoid it. It is so miserable and WILL give you diarrhea. You don’t want to have to keep running to the bathroom, after you have your baby. And you don’t want to do it while having your baby, either. How embarrassing! I don’t believe it actually goes into your birth canal. The only reason the baby would “slide” out after taking castor oil, is from strong, painful contractions. I tried it to start my labor after 40 weeks (4cm dilated) and it was painful and I truly regretted it. It also didn’t work, so my abdomen and bottom was sore for 3 days for nothing. Maybe that theory comes from a lack of knowledge of the reproductive tract (before men studied that stuff), the fact that it’s an oil, and the fact that it does sometimes induce labor. Interesting… I can say that strong contractions do get that baby out quicker. My doc came to check me and said “Whoa! Bring the table in here!”. I pushed twice and that baby was out…no lie.
