During the Civil War, most slaves were primarily Christian. If they were lucky, they were allowed to worship with the white Christians, but more often they worshiped apart. An example of a church that slaves could worship in is the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Augusta County in Virginia, It was formed when the whites didnt allow the slaves to worship in their churches. The Nat Turner insurrection resulted in the black codes developing. These laws said blacks didnt have the right of assembly unless whites were with them. Thus, this preveneted black slaves from having any religious cermonies at all. The black codes were no longer in force by the end of the Cilvil War. The ten cent church was then created. It got its name because in the beginning, the members had to pay ten cents to help for the costs of building it. By August of 1876, the church was very successful and had many faithful members.
