Dubrovniks Old City was a World Heritage Site. How are these sites chosen?
The identification of World Heritage Sites, which include cultural as well as natural sites, is governed by the terms of the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. More than 150 states, including the United States, adhere to the convention. States that are parties to the treaty nominate sites within their borders; no site can be designated a World Heritage Site without the agreement of the nation or nations within whose borders it lies. An international committee reviews nominations and oversees the World Heritage List, which currently includes over 700 sites in more than 120 countries.
