Don’t other passport schemes cover the safe use of gas cylinders and associated equipment?
No, they don’t. We have found that almost all of the existing safety passport schemes do not cover the safe use of gas cylinders and associated equipment at all. Those that do only mention it as a very small part of a broad scheme that covers many other topics and is designed to provide a “basic knowledge of Health & Safety”. Furthermore, if for example a welder wishes to apply for a general basic Safety Passport, he or she is asked to provide evidence that they know how to weld. This is in no way a guarantee that the individual knows the properties, hazards and risks of the gases and processes being undertaken; it simply means they are a welder, i.e. they have passed a welding course, possibly many years ago at college, and may have been working in an unsafe manner even since.
