Genetic counselors can receive certification from the American Board of Genetic Counselors. Certification is not an enforceable standard. Even though certification requires appropriate education and training, it is not mandatory nor is it legally enforceable. Licensure will ensure the responsible practice of genetic counselors in Tennessee, protecting the consumer from harm.
