Doesnt the new intelligence facility guarantee Ft Gordon will never close?
– Adding what will likely be a $500M+ facility to Ft Gordon certainly makes it unlikely Ft Gordon would ever completely close. It will not, however, prevent other missions from being moved to create efficiencies and savings. Consider the following: – Because of the realignment of Army communications assets, Fort Gordon is already projected to lose one signal battalion (about 475 soldiers) in 2008 when it relocates to Ft Hood, TX. Further mission realignments could result in additional losses (or gains). – Ft Gordon is one of the smaller Army installations, limiting the types of missions which could be added. Ft Benning is 3 times the size; Ft Stewart is 5 times the size. – After the 2005 BRAC closures and realignments are complete, Ft Gordon will be one of only 3 remaining training installations that house a single training school (Signal). All of the other schools except aviation (Ft Rucker) and military intelligence (Ft Huachuca) have been combined/consolidated into multi-discipline
