Doesn it demean humans to give rights to animals?
A tongue-in-cheek, though valid, answer to this question is given by David Cowles-Hamar: “Humans are animals, so animal rights are human rights!” In a more serious vein, we can observe that giving rights to women and black people does not demean white males. By analogy, then, giving rights to nonhumans does not demean humans. If anything, by being morally consistent, and widening the circle of compassion to deserving nonhumans, we ennoble humans.
