Doesn’t having an electric motor defeat the purpose of riding a bicycle?

A. It certainly would do if you were training to be a racer. The fact is that over one million bicycles were sold in Australia last year and the majority of them were for fitness, recreational or commuting activities. Recreational and commuting activities are made much more pleasant and more viable on an electric assist bicycle because “when the going gets too tough” you have some help. Riding for fitness is a personal thing. A dedicated fitness rider will ride no matter what the conditions. Others find they will ride “further and more often” when they know they have help if they need it. Q.
