Does writing essays and prose come from the same place as songwriting?
It does, although I think they’re completely different enterprises. Nevertheless, I do loosely compare songwriting to writing paragraphs. When I’m working on a song, there are individual little licks that I relate to words and sentences. You’re putting sentences together in paragraphs, and you’re putting paragraphs together in an entire essay. Everything has to mean something. You just can’t be frivolous. With an essay, I wouldn’t have anything in there just to kill time. I wouldn’t do that in a song either. Well with an essay you’re telling one story whereas in a song you’re using the music and lyrics to tell a story. Ideally or mystically, the song is telling the same message as the lyrics. I know that’s a stretch, but you aim for that that. I think the lyrics for “Pretty Flowers” really portray what the song is about.
