Does Wolfowitz have the gravitas to understand this and motivate his staff?
Joseph Hunt Dorchester, Mass. One thing I noticed in spending time with Wolfowitz is that he rarely mentions the Millennium Development Goals (M.D.G.s) directly. Maybe he regards them as the legacy of the Clinton Administration, and of his predecessor, James Wolfensohn, but, I have to admit, I did not ask him about this specifically. As I point out in my article, Wolfowitz does talk a lot about the Gleneagles agreement, of 2005, which led to the cancellation of billions of dollars of debts. Tony Blair, Bono, and others in the development community look upon the Gleneagles agreement as an integral part of the process leading to the achievement of the M.D.G.s. You could argue that Wolfowitz is supporting the millennium campaign indirectly through that route, as well as more directly by calling for increased levels of aid. Ultimately, however, I don’t think it will be Wolfowitz or his successor who will determine whether the M.D.G.s are achieved: that is primarily a matter for governments
