Does wind power benefit unfairly from government subsidies and tax incentives?
Wind power gets no special financial treatment of any kind from the State of Maine, and there are no plans for that in the Legislature. Under the Federal economic stimulus plan, there is a choice for developers between a short-term renewable energy grant program or a U.S. income tax credit to owners of wind projects if they begin operation before the end of 2010. The purpose is to “level the playing field” for wind and other renewables when compared with traditional fossil fuel and nuclear power sources which have benefitted for years from special tax benefits and other subsidies.
