Definitely they do exist — a trip to any search engine and typing the words “buy voodoo doll” will attest to that. Voodoo, likewise, exists — it is an official religion. There is also hoodoo, a related practice but not necessarily religious in nature. “How it works” is a bit tricky to answer. Religion-wise, it works like any other religion would; people believe in it, live their lives by its rules etc. As for how magic works, there’s disagreement on that topic, and will be until the day it can be done on demand for scientists. How one operates a voodoo-doll, though, involves charging it up and using it as a representative of the person who is the target. So, if you want to cause pain to the person, you torment and injure the doll. If you want the person to love you, sweet talk and fondle the doll, and so on.
