They cause short-term cooling for a couple of years due to all the ash they spew into the atmosphere, which blocks sunlight. However, this ash doesn’t stay in the atmosphere very long, and they also release a lot of CO2, which stays in the atmosphere much longer. So in the long-term, they cause warming.
