Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is an embarrassing and sometimes painful condition that affects 1 to 3 percent of the U.S. population. More common in senior citizens, this condition thickens the toenail and often results in pain, especially while wearing shoes. Wearing open-toed shoes provides relief for many, however, people rarely want their toenail fungus seen in public. Prescription and over-the-counter remedies exist for toenail fungus. However, some rely on natural remedies to cure this problem, namely the use of vinegar and grapefruit.
