Does version X of TIPC inter-operate with version Y?
TIPC software is derived from one of 3 different code streams. • The TIPC 1.3 stream is the basis of TIPC 1.3 and TIPC 1.4. • The TIPC 1.5 stream is the basis of TIPC 1.5 and TIPC 1.6. • The TIPC 1.7 stream is the basis of TIPC 1.7. Versions that belong to the same code stream will inter-operate, so applications in mixed networks should be able to detect one another and exchange messages. The TIPC 1.3 stream is largely compatible with the TIPC 1.5 stream; however, there are some limitations that users need to keep in mind. • TIPC name types 8 to 63 are reserved in the TIPC 1.5 stream, so it is not possible for a TIPC 1.5-based socket to send to a TIPC 1.3-based socket that has published such a name. • Significant changes to multicasting were made in TIPC 1.5, so the use of multicasting applications in a mixed-release network may prove problematic. However, a TIPC 1.5-based network that has multicasting applications should be able to incorporate TIPC 1.3-based nodes safely as long as th
