Does using portable heaters make the electric bills go way up?

One or two portable heaters will of course raise your electric bill, but not as much as if you were running central heat. Space heaters are pretty efficient, and of course you aren’t wasting energy heating every room of the house. I live in an apartment, and we use one space heater exclusively for our heating needs. We only really run it on cold nights, and wear sweaters and blankets for added heat. When you compare our heating bills from a month of pleasant temperature to a month of cold temperatures, there is only a few dollars difference. Space heaters can be a fire hazard, so make sure you use it properly. I think it should go without saying, but some important factors in how much it will raise your bill include how insulated your room is, and how hot you want it to be. In California, we are comfortable with setting the heat to around 68-70 in the winter, so we will be paying less than in areas on the East Coast where people are accustomed to setting their heat to 85+! Also, I live
