UniCare Health Plans of the Midwest, Inc. has participated in HEDIS data collection and reporting for its HMO plan for a number of years. The Plan recognizes HEDIS as an important tool for the managed care industry as it addresses a full spectrum of health care issues from prevention and early detection to acute and chronic care. HEDIS also serves as a helpful tool for employers and members when accessing the competency level of a managed care plan. The HEDIS program is sponsored and maintained by NCQA, an independent non-profit organization that measures and evaluates the effectiveness of managed care. HEDIS was developed by a committee of health care consumers, providers, public health officials and others. HEDIS measures a plans performance in several key areas, including effectiveness of care, stability of the health plan, accessibility/availability of care, membership and satisfaction, and use of services.
